Growing Food in Soshanguve (Part 24): Kale Growth Audit — Leaf Development and Compost Application
The morning of July 31, 2026, was cold and clear — the last day of winter, technically, though the cold would linger for another month. I walked out to the kale bed with a bucket of chicken feather compost and a sense of anticipation. The kale had been in the ground for 43 days, and it was time for the first major growth audit.
I stood at the edge of the bed and looked at the plants. When I planted them as cuttings in June, they were small — barely 10cm tall, with just a few leaves. Now they were 25–35cm tall, with broad, crinkled leaves and thick, sturdy stems. The transformation was remarkable.
Kale is one of those crops that rewards patience. It spends weeks building roots underground before it shows you anything above ground. But once it decides to grow, there's no stopping it.
Today was also the day for the second compost application. I had applied the first batch on July 1, about two weeks after planting. That application gave the plants a boost, and they responded well. Now it was time for a second dose — to keep the momentum going through the peak growing season.
In this post, I'll document the growth audit — the leaf development, the plant vigor, the compost application, and the overall health of the crop. I'll also share the mistakes I've made and the lessons I've learned.
1. The State of the Crop
I started by walking the length of the bed, looking at each plant. The first thing I noticed was the colour. The leaves were a deep, vibrant green with a slight blue-green tint — a characteristic of healthy, well-nourished kale.
I reached down and touched a leaf. It was thick and crinkly — the texture of curly kale. It felt firm and crisp, not limp or wilted. That told me the plants were well-hydrated and taking up nutrients efficiently.
The stems were thick and sturdy — about the thickness of my thumb. Thin, spindly stems would have been a sign of poor nutrition or stress. But these stems were strong, supporting the heavy leaves without bending.
Here's the data I recorded:
- Days since propagation: 43 days (June 18 to July 31)
- Plants: 10 plants in a 2m² bed
- Average plant height: 25–35cm
- Average leaf length: 15–25cm
- Average leaves per plant: 8–12
- Health rating: 9/10
I was particularly pleased with the leaf count. At 8–12 leaves per plant, the kale was producing well. Each leaf was about 15–25cm long — the perfect size for harvest.
The growth rate was consistent — about 2–3cm of new leaf length per week. That's exactly what I want to see in winter. In summer, it would be faster, but winter growth is steady and reliable.
The kale has responded well to the feather compost and fish fertilizer. The leaves are a deep, healthy green, and the stems are thick and sturdy. The slow-release nitrogen from the compost is providing steady nutrition without causing the rapid, weak growth that fast-release fertilizers can cause.
I also noticed something else — the mulch layer was still intact. The chicken feather compost I had applied on July 1 was about 6–8cm thick, slightly thinner than the original 8–10cm. It had settled and partially decomposed, which is normal. The soil underneath was dark, moist, and crumbly — exactly what I want to see.
2. The Second Compost Application

The second compost application was the main event of the day. I had been planning this for weeks — the kale needed a boost to sustain its rapid leaf production.
I filled a bucket with chicken feather compost — the dark, crumbly material that had been curing for weeks. It smelled earthy and rich, like forest floor after rain. I carried it to the bed and started working.
The technique is simple. I applied the compost in a 10–15cm ring around each plant, keeping it 3–5cm away from the stem. This creates a "donut" of compost around the plant, with the stem in the center. The compost feeds the roots without touching the stem, which can cause rot.
I applied about 3–4cm of compost — a generous layer that would feed the plants for weeks. The compost was dark and crumbly, full of nutrients and beneficial microbes.
After applying the compost, I watered it in. I used a gentle shower, about 1–2 liters per plant. The water settled the compost, activated the microbes, and started the process of nutrient release.
I made a mistake during the first compost application. I applied it too close to the stems, and the compost caused rot on a few plants. Now I always leave a 3–5cm gap, and I haven't had any problems since.
Kale is a heavy feeder. One compost application is not enough for a full season. I've learned to apply compost every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. The plants respond quickly — within a week, the leaves are darker green and growth accelerates.
3. The Leaf Inspection
Inspecting the kale. The leaves are broad, thick, and deeply coloured — all signs of a healthy plant.
The leaf inspection was the most important part of the audit. Kale leaves tell you everything about the plant's health — colour, texture, size, and posture all provide clues.
I started by looking at the colour. The leaves were deep green with a slight blue-green tint — the hallmark of healthy kale. Pale green would have been a sign of nitrogen deficiency. Yellowing would have been a sign of stress or overwatering.
Next, I checked the texture. The leaves were thick and crinkled — the characteristic of curly kale. Thin, flat leaves would have been a sign of poor nutrition or heat stress.
I also checked for pests. I lifted each leaf and examined the undersides. I found no aphids, no cabbage worms, no mildew. The crop was clean.
I measured a few leaves. The largest ones were about 25cm long and 15cm wide — a good size for the first harvest. I made a mental note: the first harvest would be in about two weeks.

4. Watering

The final step was watering. I watered the bed with about 1–2 liters per plant, using a gentle spray from a hose nozzle.

After watering, I checked the mulch layer. It was still intact, but some areas had settled. I redistributed the mulch to maintain a consistent 8–10cm depth.
5. Mistakes I've Made
I've made plenty of mistakes with kale. Here are the ones I want to share:
Mistake #1: I didn't feed kale enough.
I thought one compost application would be enough. The plants grew well for a month, then slowed down. Now I apply compost every 4–6 weeks.
Mistake #2: I applied compost too close to the stems.
The compost caused rot on a few plants. Now I always leave a 3–5cm gap.
Mistake #3: I let the soil dry out.
The leaves wilted and the plants stressed. Now I water consistently, checking the soil moisture every few days.
Mistake #4: I harvested too many leaves at once.
I took 50% of the leaves from each plant. The plants were stunted. Now I take no more than 30% at a time.
Mistake #5: I didn't check for pests regularly.
Aphids exploded on my kale, and I lost a third of the crop. Now I check weekly without fail.
6. What to Expect
The kale is on track for a continuous harvest. Here's what I expect over the coming months:
August 1–14: Rapid leaf expansion — plants reach full size (30–40cm). I'll start harvesting in mid-August.
August 15–31: First harvest — I'll remove outer leaves (cut-and-come-again).
September–October: Continuous harvesting every 10–14 days. The plants will produce steadily.
November: End of production cycle — plants may bolt as temperatures rise.
I've been through this cycle before, and I know what to expect. Kale tests your patience, but it rewards you in the end.
