🌱 Why Homemade Liquid Fertilizers?

In the challenging climate of Soshanguve, Pretoria, urban gardeners face unique obstacles: intense summer heat, poor soil structure, and limited access to affordable organic inputs. At Evergreen Hideout Agricultural Services, we've spent years developing homemade liquid fertilizers that address these specific challenges — using locally sourced ingredients and fermentation techniques that make nutrients bio-available to plants.

Unlike synthetic fertilizers that can burn roots and degrade soil biology, our fish-based liquid fertilizer is fermented to preserve beneficial microbes and amino acids. It provides a steady supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals that leafy greens, brassicas, and alliums need to thrive. The fermentation process also breaks down fish proteins into plant-available forms, reducing the risk of nutrient lockout and ensuring your plants can access what they need when they need it.

Why we use chicken feather compost alongside liquid fertilizers: In our garden, we've found that combining slow-release feather compost with fast-acting liquid feeds gives the best results. The compost builds long-term soil structure and microbial life, while the liquid fertilizer provides an immediate boost during critical growth phases — such as transplanting, flowering, and fruiting. This two-pronged approach is the foundation of our regenerative gardening system, and it's the same method we teach in our workshops.

Who should use this fertilizer? Whether you're growing tomatoes in containers, leafy greens in raised beds, or fruit trees in your backyard, our fish-based liquid fertilizer provides the nitrogen boost your plants need. We've used it successfully on Swiss chard, kale, spinach, spring onions, and even fruiting crops like peppers and beans. The 1:10 dilution ratio is safe for most garden plants, and we recommend starting with half-strength for seedlings or sensitive crops.

How to use it: Dilute 1 part fertilizer to 10 parts water and apply directly to the soil around the base of your plants. For best results, water your plants before applying the diluted fertilizer to ensure the nutrients reach the root zone. Apply every 14 days during the active growing season, and reduce frequency during cooler months. Always use room-temperature water — cold water can shock plant roots and reduce nutrient uptake.
