🔬 Vegetable Diagnostic Center

Identify the problem, find the cause, and fix it — fast. Based on my 5+ years of gardening in the Gauteng Highveld.

⚠️ Important:

This guide is based on my personal experience in Soshanguve. Your results may vary. For serious outbreaks, consult your local agricultural extension office.


🍃 Leaf Problems

Common Yellow Leaves (Chlorosis)

Symptoms: Leaves turn pale green or yellow, starting with older leaves. Veins may stay green while the rest of the leaf yellows.

Possible Causes: Nitrogen deficiency (most common), overwatering (roots drowning), or poor drainage.

Fix:

  • Nitrogen deficiency: Apply fish fertilizer (1:10 dilution) as a soil drench. New growth should turn green within 5–7 days.
  • Overwatering: Stop watering until the top 5cm of soil is dry. Improve drainage by raising beds or adding compost.
  • Poor drainage: Add organic matter (compost, well-rotted manure) to improve soil structure.

From the field: "I once lost a row of chard to overwatering. The leaves turned yellow, the roots rotted, and I had to replant. Now I always check soil moisture before watering."

Moderate Brown Leaf Tips or Edges

Symptoms: Leaf tips or edges turn brown and crispy. Often starts at the tip and works backward.

Possible Causes: Underwatering, heat stress, fertilizer burn, or salt buildup in the soil.

Fix:

  • Underwatering/Heat stress: Water deeply (1–2 liters per plant) and apply a thick mulch layer (8–10cm) to retain moisture.
  • Fertilizer burn: Stop fertilizing. Flush the soil with water (5–10 liters per square meter). Reduce fertilizer concentration next time.
  • Salt buildup: Leach the soil by watering deeply and allowing it to drain. Use rainwater if possible.
Common Holes in Leaves

Symptoms: Small or large holes in leaves. You may see the pests or their droppings (frass).

Possible Causes: Caterpillars (cabbage worms, armyworms), flea beetles, or slugs/snails.

Fix:

  • Caterpillars: Hand-pick and remove. Apply BT spray (Bacillus thuringiensis) for organic control.
  • Flea beetles: Apply diatomaceous earth around the base of plants. Use floating row covers.
  • Slugs/Snails: Beer traps (sink a shallow lid filled with beer). Hand-pick at dusk.

From the field: "Cutworms destroyed my first cauliflower planting. I lost 12 seedlings overnight. Now I always use cardboard collars — they cost nothing and work."

Moderate White Powdery Spots (Powdery Mildew)

Symptoms: White or grey powdery spots on leaves. Starts on lower leaves and spreads upward.

Possible Causes: High humidity, poor air circulation, or overhead watering. Common on brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, kale).

Fix:

  • Milk spray: Mix 40% milk with 60% water. Spray on affected leaves every 5 days.
  • Remove affected leaves: Dispose of them in the trash (not compost).
  • Improve airflow: Ensure spacing is at least 30–45cm between plants. Water at the base, not overhead.

🌱 Root & Soil Problems

Common Plant Wilting Despite Watering

Symptoms: Leaves droop and wilt even when the soil is moist. Plants look stressed.

Possible Causes: Root rot (overwatering), compacted soil, or root-bound plants (in containers).

Fix:

  • Root rot: Stop watering. Let the soil dry out. Improve drainage by adding compost or sand.
  • Compacted soil: Loosen the soil with a garden fork without damaging the roots. Add organic matter.
  • Root-bound: Transplant to a larger container or into the ground. Gently tease apart the roots.
Moderate Small or Misshapen Bulbs (Root Crops)

Symptoms: Beetroot, carrots, or onions are small, misshapen, or forked.

Possible Causes: Overcrowding, compacted soil, or inconsistent moisture.

Fix:

  • Overcrowding: Thin seedlings to the correct spacing (10cm for beetroot, 2–3cm for carrots).
  • Compacted soil: Loosen soil deeply (15–20cm) before planting. Add compost or sand.
  • Inconsistent moisture: Water deeply and consistently. Mulch to retain moisture.

🐛 Pest Problems

Common Aphids (Sticky Leaves, Curled Growth)

Symptoms: Small green, black, or white insects on leaf undersides. Leaves curl and become sticky (honeydew).

Possible Causes: Aphid infestation. They reproduce quickly in warm weather.

Fix:

  • Soapy water spray: 1 teaspoon castile soap per 1 liter of water. Spray every 3 days until gone.
  • Blast with water: Strong jet of water knocks aphids off the plant.
  • Plant alliums nearby: Garlic, onions, and chives repel aphids.
  • Beneficial insects: Ladybugs and lacewings eat aphids. Attract them with dill, fennel, or marigolds.
Common Cutworms (Seedlings Severed at Base)

Symptoms: Seedlings are cut off at the soil line and found lying on their side. Damage appears overnight.

Possible Causes: Cutworm caterpillars that live in the soil and emerge at night.

Fix:

  • Cardboard collars: Cut 5cm circles from cardboard, slit to the center, and place around each stem. Works 90% of the time.
  • Diatomaceous earth: Sprinkle a ring around each plant.
  • Hand-picking: Dig 2–3cm around damaged plants at dawn to find and remove cutworms.

From the field: "I lost 12 cauliflower seedlings to cutworms. Now I never plant without cardboard collars."


🌦️ Environmental Stress

Moderate Plants Bolting (Flowering Prematurely)

Symptoms: Plants suddenly produce flower stalks. Leaves become bitter and tough. Common in lettuce, spinach, and brassicas.

Possible Causes: Temperature stress (cold spell followed by warm spell) or increasing daylength (spring).

Fix:

  • Harvest immediately: Once a plant bolts, it won't recover. Harvest all remaining leaves and use them fresh.
  • Prevention: Plant bolt-resistant varieties. Time your planting for autumn/winter harvests.
Common Plants Stunted or Slow Growth

Symptoms: Plants are smaller than expected. Leaves are pale or yellow. Growth is slow.

Possible Causes: Low soil temperature, insufficient nutrients, poor root development, or compacted soil.

Fix:

  • Low soil temperature: Apply mulch (8–10cm) to insulate the soil. Use raised beds for warmer soil.
  • Insufficient nutrients: Apply fish fertilizer (1:10) or compost tea.
  • Compacted soil: Loosen the soil with a garden fork. Add organic matter.

🥕 Fruit & Bulb Problems

Moderate Small Garlic Bulbs

Symptoms: Garlic bulbs are small (under 3cm diameter). Plants may have lots of leaves but small bulbs.

Possible Causes: Too much nitrogen (excess leaves, small bulbs), planted too shallow, or harvested too early.

Fix:

  • Too much nitrogen: Stop using fish fertilizer on garlic. Switch to fruit fertilizer (high potassium) in August.
  • Planted too shallow: Plant cloves 5cm deep next time.
  • Harvest too early: Wait until 50% of leaves have died back before harvesting.

From the field: "I used fish fertilizer on garlic once — huge leaves, tiny bulbs. Now I only use slow-release compost."
