Regular growth monitoring of beetroots involves checking both the leaves and vegetables underground. Leaf appearance gives an indication about how well the beetroot is growing overall and when it should be harvested. Bulb development is another key aspect that shows underground maturation. Frequent inspections are a means of discovering any issues in beetroots, like pests or nutrient deficiencies, that could be hindering their growth.

Our beetroot plants are doing extremely well already! Permaculture management emphasizes continual observation and health assessments. Spending some time to closely examine each plant's leaves for early signs of pests or diseases makes sure that we don't have to worry about stressed plants and that the main parts, the roots of beetroot, keep getting bigger. At 13 days from transplanting, the seedlings have successfully taken over the hillside beds and are now going through a fast period of vegetative development before the bulbs start expanding.

Beetroot Growth Audit: Leaf Development and Bulb Formation Tracking

At 13 days post-transplant (Post #22), our beetroot seedlings have transitioned from the establishment phase into rapid vegetative growth. The plants are developing strong leaf canopies, and the bulbs are beginning to swell beneath the soil surface. Today's growth audit tracks leaf expansion, root development, and overall plant health — because consistent monitoring during this phase ensures a successful harvest.

This is the first major growth update for our beetroot (Post #22), covering 13 days of development from transplant (July 14) to mid-season (July 27). We're tracking leaf expansion, bulb swelling, and soil conditions — because root crops reward consistent observation with reliable, nutrient-dense harvests.


System Overview: Beetroot Timeline and Metrics

Before we dive into the growth audit, let us establish where the beetroot stands in its growth cycle:

Planting timeline:

  • Transplant date: July 14, 2026 (Post #22)
  • Days since transplant: 13 days (approximately 2 weeks)
  • Variety: 'Detroit Dark Red' (heirloom, 55–65 days to maturity)
  • Number of plants: 24 plants in a 3m² bed
  • Spacing: 10cm between plants, 25cm between rows

Key interventions applied since planting:

  • Feather compost top-dressing (Post #13): Maintained as mulch layer at 8–10cm depth.
  • Fish fertilizer (Post #10): Applied at transplant (1:10 dilution). Next application due this week (July 27–August 3).
  • Weed management (Post #9): Hand-pulled weeds weekly.
  • Watering: Deep watering (0.5–1 liter per plant) every 5–7 days, depending on rainfall.

Growth metrics — current status (July 27):

  • Average plant height: 15–20cm (from soil line to top of leaves) — increased from 10–15cm at transplant.
  • Average leaf length: 12–18cm (from base to tip) — increased from 8–12cm.
  • Average leaf count per plant: 6–8 leaves (up from 4–6 at transplant).
  • Leaf color: Deep green with red veining — excellent nitrogen status.
  • Stem color: Deep red — indicates good nutrient uptake and anthocyanin production.
  • Growth rate: 2–3cm new leaf length per week — consistent.
  • Bulb development: Bulbs are beginning to swell (approximately 1–2cm diameter) — visible when gently brushing aside soil.
  • Overall health rating: 9/10 (no pests, no disease, excellent vigor).

Bulb development tracking:

  • Beetroot bulbs typically begin swelling 2–3 weeks after transplant.
  • We are at 2 weeks — bulb initiation is underway.
  • Currently, bulbs are approximately 1–2cm in diameter.
  • We expect rapid expansion over the next 4 weeks, reaching 5–8cm by late August.
  • We will begin weekly bulb inspections starting July 27.

Expected timeline for remaining growth:

  • July 27–August 3 (Week 3): Vegetative growth continues — leaves expand, bulbs reach 2–3cm.
  • August 4–17 (Week 4–5): Bulb expansion accelerates — bulbs reach 4–6cm.
  • August 18–31 (Week 6–7): Bulbs reach full size (5–8cm) — HARVEST WINDOW.

Step 1: Routine Pest and Disease Inspection

In the video sequence, I perform a methodical, row-by-row health sweep before any watering begins. I carefully lift and examine both sides of the beetroot leaves to check for hidden insects or fungal spots. Catching minor pest pressures early allows us to make organic interventions before irrigation can spread potential spores across the leaves.

Pest scouting protocol — what to look for and where:

  • Aphids (most common): Small, soft-bodied insects that cluster on the undersides of leaves and at growing tips. They suck sap and excrete honeydew (sticky residue).
  • Where to look: Undersides of lower leaves (most vulnerable), leaf axils (where leaves join the stem), and the growing point (center of the plant).
  • How to inspect: Gently lift each leaf and examine the underside. Use a magnifying glass if needed. Look for clusters of tiny insects, sticky residue (honeydew), or sooty mold (black fungus growing on honeydew).
  • Leaf miners: Small larvae that tunnel between leaf layers, creating visible trails. Look for white or brown winding lines on the leaf surface.
  • Fungal diseases: Yellow spots (Cercospora leaf spot), white powdery spots (powdery mildew), or brown spots (downy mildew).

Action thresholds — when to intervene:

  • Aphids: Intervention when populations exceed 10 per plant or when honeydew is visible. Intervention: Soapy water spray (1 teaspoon castile soap per liter), every 3 days.
  • Leaf miners: Intervention at any visible sign. Intervention: Remove affected leaves and dispose of them.
  • Powdery mildew: Intervention at any visible sign. Intervention: Remove affected leaves, apply milk spray (40% milk, 60% water) every 5 days.

Our scouting results (July 27):

  • Aphids: None found.
  • Leaf miners: None found.
  • Fungal diseases: None found.
  • Beneficial insects: Ladybugs and lacewings observed — excellent.
  • Current status: No intervention needed — crop is healthy and pest-free.

Diagnostic conclusion: The beetroot is healthy and growing steadily. No pests or diseases present. The feather compost mulch is providing adequate nutrition and protecting the soil.


Step 2: Assessing Foliage Growth and Canopy Progress

The deep red petioles indicate good nutrient uptake — particularly phosphorus and potassium — which are essential for root development.

What we look for during leaf and stem inspection:

  • Leaf color: Deep green indicates adequate nitrogen. Pale green or yellow indicates nitrogen deficiency. Our leaves are deep green — excellent.
  • Leaf posture: Upright, reaching leaves indicate good vigor. Droopy or flat leaves indicate stress (underwatering, overwatering, or nutrient issues). Our leaves are upright — excellent.
  • Stem color: Deep red indicates good phosphorus and potassium uptake. Pale stems indicate nutrient deficiency. Our stems are deep red — excellent.
  • Canopy density: A thick canopy protects the soil from evaporation and suppresses weeds. Our canopy is thickening — excellent.
  • Mulch condition: Feather compost mulch should be 8–10cm thick, not matted down. Our mulch is intact and well-distributed.
  • Soil moisture: Soil should be damp but not waterlogged. Our soil is moist.
  • Weed pressure: Minimal weeds present — our hand-weeding protocol (Post #9) is working effectively.

Growth rate assessment — measuring progress:

  • Leaves are growing at a rate of 2–3cm per week — consistent with healthy winter growth.
  • Bulbs are beginning to swell — approximately 1–2cm diameter.
  • Root expansion is on track for the expected harvest window (late August).

Diagnostic conclusion: The beetroot is healthy and growing steadily. The feather compost is providing adequate nutrition. The mulch is protecting the soil and roots from winter temperature fluctuations.


Step 3: Post-Inspection Deep Irrigation

Photo note: Once the health audits are complete, the final step in the sequence is to stabilize moisture. A gentle shower is applied directly to the rows, settling the disturbed mulch and hydrating the root zone.

Uniform moisture keeps the soil soft and friable, reducing resistance so the beetroot bulbs can swell continuously without splitting.

Winter irrigation protocol for beetroot:

  • Frequency: Water every 5–7 days, depending on rainfall and soil moisture.
  • Volume: 0.5–1 liter per plant (approximately 5–10 liters per square meter).
  • Water temperature: Room temperature (18–22°C). Cold tap water (10–12°C in winter) shocks roots.
  • Application method: Gentle spray or shower at the base of each plant. Do not use a jet nozzle — it can damage leaves and wash away mulch.
  • Timing: Water in the morning (so the soil has time to absorb before night, reducing fungal risk).
  • Beetroot-specific note: Consistent moisture is critical for beetroot. Fluctuations in moisture can cause the bulbs to crack or become woody. Never let the top 5cm of soil dry out completely.

Why we water after scouting:

  • Scouting disturbs the mulch layer and can expose soil to drying.
  • Watering after scouting settles the disturbed mulch and rehydrates the root zone.
  • It also activates the feather compost, releasing nutrients for uptake.
  • It washes off any dust or debris that may have settled on leaves during inspection.

Management Takeaways

  • Inspect Before You Water: Checking leaves prior to irrigation prevents water from washing pests into the crown or spreading foliar pathogens. This is a critical step in preventing disease outbreaks.
  • Focus on Stem Health: Deep red, sturdy petioles indicate strong nutrient uptake from our organic soil biology and chicken feathers compost. Pale stems are an early warning sign of nutrient deficiency.
  • Consistent Soil Moisture: Maintaining even moisture levels along the mounded bed ensures steady bulb expansion without root cracking. Fluctuations in moisture are the most common cause of split or woody beetroot.
  • Canopy Protection: A dense leaf canopy protects the soil from evaporation and suppresses weed growth. It also shades the developing bulbs, preventing them from turning green and bitter.

Failure Mode Analysis: Beetroot Winter Growing Edition

Failure 1: Leaves turn yellow (nitrogen deficiency).
Cause: Not enough nitrogen — beetroot is a moderate feeder.
Recovery: Apply fish fertilizer (1:10 dilution) as a soil drench. New growth should turn green within 5–7 days.
Prevention: Maintain 3–4cm compost layer. Apply fish fertilizer every 14 days during vegetative growth.

Failure 2: Leaves have holes (insect damage).
Cause: Aphids, leaf miners, or flea beetles.
Recovery: Spray with soapy water (1 teaspoon castile soap per liter) every 3 days until pests are gone.
Prevention: Check leaves weekly. Encourage beneficial insects (ladybugs, lacewings).

Failure 3: Cracked or woody bulbs.
Cause: Inconsistent moisture (wet-dry cycles) or over-maturity.
Recovery: None for current crop — cracked bulbs are still edible but won't store well.
Prevention: Maintain consistent moisture. Water when the top 5cm of soil is dry. Harvest when bulbs are 5–8cm in diameter.

Failure 4: Bulbs turn green and bitter.
Cause: Bulbs exposed to sunlight (too shallow or soil washed away).
Recovery: Mound soil around the exposed bulbs immediately.
Prevention: Plant at the correct depth (crown level with soil). Maintain mulch layer to prevent soil erosion.

Failure 5: Bolting (flowering prematurely).
Cause: Temperature stress (cold spell followed by warm spell) or daylength increasing.
Recovery: Harvest immediately — the plant is ending its production cycle.
Prevention: Plant bolt-resistant varieties ('Detroit Dark Red' is bolt-resistant). Plant in autumn (April–June) so the plant matures before spring daylength triggers bolting.
